Abstract

The linear stepper-motor, which drives the head radially across the disc, comprises a stator (30) having a plurality of poles (38) having windings (40) energized in different phases; and a slider (28) having transverse teeth (34) which cooperate with teeth (36) on the poles so as to form a variable reluctance path through the slider. Longitudinally extending grooves in the slider cooperate with similar grooves in the stator to receive ball bearings for supporting the slider. <IMAGE>
