Abstract

A pedal-operated brake booster incorporates a valve mechanism for controlling pressurisation of a boost chamber 52. The valve mechanism comprises a pedal-operated piston 5 and a pressure-responsive valve spool 19 which is coupled to the piston 5 for limited relative movement in a longitudinal direction within a working chamber 54 in the piston 5. The spool 19 is movable with the piston 5 (by ring 26 abutting shoulder 65) in an initial brake-applying direction in which the spool 19 is operative to isolate (at bores 35, 36) the boost chamber 52 from an exhaust port 38 and the piston 5 is operative (by its shoulder 15) to place an inlet port 12 in communication with the working chamber 54. This causes the spool 19 to move relatively away from the piston 5 in response to pressure fluid in the working chamber 54 which fluid is admitted (via passages 29, 66 and 33) to the boost chamber 52 hence providing a greater movement of a master cylinder piston 8 than of the piston 5 unless there is a pressure supply failure when the piston 5 actuates the piston 8 directly. The pistons 7 and 8 may be separate or integral. <IMAGE>
