Abstract

A system intended to notify a user about the existence of a point of interest (POI), such as places of historical, environmental, scientific or other interest, in their surrounding area and to provide the user with customised information concerning the POIs. The system comprises a user device, such as a hand held or vehicle mounted device, which is in communication with a database storing information relating to POIs. The system may automatically determine a users location using GPS or similar means or may allow a user to select a location. A search area is defined based on the location coordinates and then POIs within the search area are found and selected to be displayed via the users device according to the users preferences. The search area and relevant POIs may automatically update with a detected change in location and the system may recognise areas of overlap between new and previous search areas.
