Abstract

Apparatus for measuring the thickness of sheets comprises two rollers 9, 10 which can be pressed together whilst permitting a sheet to be measured to be passed between them and a unit for 17, 18 sensing the relative displacement of the said rollers 9, 10 when a sheet is present in which at least one roller 9 has a high friction and sound deadening surface. The relative displacement of the rollers 9, 10 when the sheet is first detected actuates an increase in pressure between rollers 9, 10 by means of spring 22 and the release of the increased pressure when the sheet has passed. Another spring 27 may provide a light pressure between rollers 9, 10 continuously. Means may be provided for measuring the length of a sheet based upon rotation of the rollers 9, 10. This reduces damage to the sound deadening surface due to unnecessary exposure of it to high pressures. The apparatus is useful for counting tickets, banknotes and the like and can be adapted to identify damaged banknotes.
