Abstract
Encoding and decoding of at least a part of an image of a sequence of images of a first image size comprises generating from at least one primary image of the sequence a reference image (e.g. composed of image portions of the primary image) based on a criterion, wherein the reference image has a second image size smaller than the first image size. An encoding mode is selected, based on the criterion, from a plurality of encoding modes including an encoding mode using the generated reference image of the second image size (e.g. temporal prediction mode), and at least part of the image is encoded according to the selected encoding mode. The criterion comprises at least one of a memory capacity of a device performing the encoding and a network constraint (e.g. average latency and/or jitter).
