Abstract

A method for improving the coding efficiency and reducing the complexity of a video encoder and a video decoder, by the harmonization of two coding modes (such as the Intra Pulse Code Modulation/IPCM mode and the Transquant/Lossless mode) of coding units resulting from the partitioning of an areas of pixels. The coding mode is selected as one of at least two modes that do not use quantisation and transform coding, with one of the modes (such the transquant/lossless mode) allowing pixel prediction. An associated syntax element (such as a flag) is encoded in the video bit stream which represents coding unit (CU) sizes for which the two modes are selectable. Alternative methods are also disclosed in which a syntax element indicates whether loop filtering is enabled or whether an area of pixels is encoded according to one of the coding modes.
