Abstract

This application concerns a quantum communication system in which a receiver performs error correction and privacy amplification. The privacy amplification is performed using an estimate of the upper bound of the information which has been intercepted by an eavesdropper, which is related to the lower bound of the secure rate (e.g. as given by equation 0.1). A parameter estimation procedure for estimating parameters (gains g0 and g1 and QBER e1) of the secure rate equation involves a numerically constrained optimization algorithm (equations 0.14-0.20) and yield-to-gain transformations (equations 0.12 and 0.13). The gains, Gj , Gj , and error probabilities Qj , Qj , used to define the constraints of the algorithm are extracted from binomial distributions (equations 0.8 and 0.9) and are calculated based on the number of light pulses Tj transmitted from a sender, the number of light pulses received at the receiver, Nj, and the number of errors detected, Ej.
