Abstract
A medical device for collecting thrombi comprises inner (12) and outer (10) catheters, an inflatable balloon (16), an inflation lumen (18), inflation fluid and a pump for providing inflation fluid to the balloon (16), and an aspirator (2) for drawing the object into the inner tube. The inner (12) and outer (10) catheters have proximal and distal (10d,12d) ends and lumens (11, 13). The balloon (16) is connected at its first end (16a) to the distal end (10d) of the outer catheter (10), and its second end to the distal end (12d) of the inner catheter (12). The aspirator (2) is connected to the proximal end of the inner catheter (12). In use the distal end (12d) of the inner catheter (12) is manoeuvred to be proximate the object to be removed. When the distal end (12d) of the inner catheter (12) reaches the thrombus (24), the outer sheath (26) is withdrawn proximally over the balloon (16) and outer tube (10), exposing the balloon (16) to the vessel. The balloon (16) is inflated and then everted to remove the thrombus (24). The aspirator (2) is activated to aid removal of the thrombus (24) from the vessel (22).
