Abstract
Apparatus and method of cleaving optical fibers where the optical fibers 1 are cleaved with an angled end. The fiber is held by clamps 4a, 5a, 4b, 5b and stressed by a combination of bending and tensioning using an anvil 6, inducing a controlled internal stress in the fiber. The fibre is scratched by a sharp cleaving blade 7. When the blade is introduced at an angle β or α (fig. 3b) away from the normal to the axis of the fiber the cutting force will tend to stress the fiber at an angle to its axis. This can be used to change the shape of the angled cleaved end which can be adjusted such that the protrusion of glass beyond the core of the optical fiber is reduced, allowing close approach between the angle cleaved optical fiber and another fibre or optoelectronic device, allowing reduced insertion loss.
