Abstract

A one-piece rotary valve 1.4, 3.4 for a reciprocating-piston machine, eg engine, compressor or pump, performs simultaneously all the intake and exhaust valve functions for all the pistons 1.0, 3.0 and cylinders 1.8, 3.8 in the machine, hence significantly reducing the number of components. The rotary valve may be in the form of a ring with cavities positioned along its circumference which cooperate with the machines intake ports 1.1, 3.1 and exhaust ports 3.1, 3.2. The machine may have a radial configuration with the pistons 1.0 inside the rotary valve 1.4, fig.1, or with pistons 3.0 outside the valve 3.4, fig.3. The rotary valve may be attached to a shaft 1.5, 3.5 to form a single component. The rotary valve may rotate at any angular speed according to the gear ratio between the valve shaft and the crankshaft. Leakage of fluids may be reduced by providing outer and inner plates 2.3, 2.7. The machine may have two valve rings (6.4,7.4, figs.6,7)
