Abstract

In a process for decreasing the mold residence time in extrusion blow molding where pressurized air 1 is used to expand a plastic into a blow molded article and pressurized liquefied gas 11 is introduced to the blown article to cool it by an evaporative cooling effect, both fluids are introduced to the blown article via a liquefied gas inlet. The liquefied gas maybe expanded through the use of a throttling device 14. Compressed air and liquefied gas maybe introduced to blow pin cylinders which may have two inlets, one for compressed air and one for liquefied gas. The process involves a number of valves and controls to control the flow of air 3 and liquefied gas 13, to control the pressure in the molded article 17 and mold cavity and to control the release of air and liquefied gas 15 from the mold cavity for which there is at least one outlet port. The valves to control the air and pressure inside the molded article and mold cavity are timed with the mold cycle as is the valve to control the liquefied gas.
