Abstract

A laminated core assembly for an electrical machine, comprise a plurality of laminations 12 configured to define a channel in a surface of the laminated core for the flow of a cooling fluid, wherein the surrounding housing 210 includes circumferentially opposite inlets and outlet manifolds 216,218 comprising elongate apertures which communicate with the channels so as to provide parallel circumferential coolant flows. Fig 7 not shown discloses manifold element which are not integrally formed with the housing. As disclosed in figs 3a,3b (not shown) each the channel has a base 322 and at least one side wall 324 which may having a stepped profile. The laminations, which carry arcuate projections of different heights, are assembled in a stack 318 with each successive lamination being rotated by α° so as to create two helical channels 20 e.g a stack 318 of twelve laminations defines two adjacent turns of intertwined channels 320a,320b. The lamination projections may alternatively comprise straight sections rather than curved arcuate sections. End laminations without projections are applied to the stack
