Abstract

A head-mounted system configured for assessing the presence or absence of a specific object within a predetermined image pick-up field in front of a user; the system comprises a base unit(frame) 30 mountable on the user's head; an image pick-up device (micro-camera) 32 mounted on the base unit in a manner corresponding to the user's eyes and configured for capturing an image of an outside object located within the predetermined image pick-up field; a transmissive display device (see-through LCD module) 34 mounted on the base unit in a manner corresponding to the user's eyes; and a processing device 36 for receiving the captured image of the outside object from the image pick-up device and assessing the presence or absence of the specific object and, if identifying the presence of the specific object, displaying image data associated to the specific object on the transmissive display device. Preferably the camera is positioned either centrally or two cameras spaced apart from each other to correspond to the users eyes. The image may use a projection system 43 to display the images. The system could be used in number plate recognition systems, translating written text and is also capable of operating a virtual keyboard , touch panel on the display device operated by hand gestures.
