Abstract

A reading device for cards which carry machine-readable data, has a reading head 12 and a guide slot 6 the bottom 8 of which is inclined relative to the bottom 2 of the housing 1 of the reading device, so as to rise in the desired direction of movement 9 of a card 7 which is to be read. The user inserts the card 7 into the guide slot 6 at one end thereof, presses the card 7 against the bottom 8 of the guide slot 6, and moves the card 7 past the reading head 12 to the other end of the guide slot 6. Contact between the card 7 and the bottom 8 of the guide slot 6 is ensured by the inclination of the bottom 8 of the guide slot 6. A recess in the side of the guide slot 6 prevents a data track 11 on the card 7 from being abraded. The reading head 12 includes at least one light source, a lens system, aperture members and light receiving means. <IMAGE>
