Abstract

A flat building element such as a door has a plurality of layers 14 of a combustible material such as wood fixed together side by side. To improve the fire-resistance of such an element, a coating 18 of a flame-resistant material or material or lower combustability is provided between the ribs 14 on their contact surfaces. Materials such as fire-protective phosphates, borates or sulphates can be used in the coatings 18. The element can include cover sheets on the faces thereof. A method of making the elements includes coating boards of the combustible material with the coating material on at least one face, dividing the board into strips and fixing these strips together with the coatings between the ribs. <IMAGE>
