Abstract

The invention provides a cyclone separator for the removal of entrained solids from gases, the cyclone separator (32) having a barrel portion (56) and a conical portion (58) which cooperatively define a separation chamber (60), a gas inlet (54) in open communication with the portion of the separation chamber defined by the barrel portion, a gas outlet tube (35) extending centrally, upwardly from the barrel portion, a solids discharge outlet (62) located at the lower end of the conical section, and a solids discharge dip- leg conduit (34) in open communication with the solids outlet, wherein L/D = -1.09 (O/I) +4.49 where D is the internal diameter of the barrel portion, L is the distance between the lower end of the outlet tube and the upper end of the dip- leg conduit, O is the cross-sectional area of the gas outlet tube (35) and I is the cross-sectional area of the gas inlet (54). The cyclone may be provided with a dust bowl 33. Two cyclones connected in series may be used to separate entrained solid catalyst from hydrocarbon vapours or flue gases in the regeneration of a fluidised catalytic cracking unit. <IMAGE>
