Abstract
A method of operating an i.c engine 12 having an exhaust after treatment system 44, includes providing a kinetic energy storage device, eg flywheel 50, and, starting with the exhaust after treatment system 44 at below normal temperature, starting the i.c.engine 12 and using the kinetic energy storage device 50 to apply a load to the engine so as to store energy in the kinetic energy storage device 50 and increase the temperature of the exhaust after treatment system 44. The flywheel 50 may be connected to the engine 12 via a gearbox 48, eg a CVT, and a clutch 52. The flywheel may run in an evacuated chamber faster than 60,000rpm. The exhaust after treatment system 44 may be a diesel oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reducer, NOx absorber or diesel particulate filter. The engine may be in a mobile material handling machine, eg back hoe loader, having actuators eg 3A,3B pressurised by a pump 42. The flywheel 50 may assist driving the machine over the ground.
