Abstract
A startup assistance apparatus for a fine pitch Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is provided and includes a generator 20 to provide motive power to the RAT when operating in a first mode and to generate electricity from RAT operation when operating in a second mode and a control unit 30, including a sensing unit configured to sense an operating condition of the generator 20 and a controller 50 operably coupled to the generator 20 and configured to control the generator 20 to operate in the first or the second mode based on the sensed operating condition. The sensed operating condition may be a generator frequency. The RAT may be a fine pitch RAT of an aircraft wherein the generator 20 provides electricity to aircraft loads in the second mode.
