Abstract

An apparatus ignites inertial confinement fusion in a target and maintains the axial burn of a cylindrical target 101, particularly for use in: defence as a directed energy weapon; propulsion by means of a beam or fusion; climate control; electricity generation; desalina­tion; irrigation; and terraforming. A leaved eye mirror optical system 161 with a final stage defining mirror 162 comprises an array of circular arrays 181-183 of hinged mirrors. The circular arrays of mirrors 181-183 output recirculated beamlets 291-293 respectively. A large number of such circular arrays of mirrors and re-circulated beamlets are provided. A cylindrical target 101 is illuminated by electromagnetic energy of rising intensity as it moves through those recirculated beamlets in order to obtain its nearly isentropic compression.
