Abstract
The LED light source comprises first and second UV/blue LED light sources 11 & 14 and a dichroic filter 15. A photoluminescent element 13 converts the radiation from the LEDs 11 & 14 to longer wavelength visible light. A third blue LED 16 may be used to introduce a blue component to the light output and the light from the third LED is not directed through the phosphorescent wavelength conversion element but is instead reflected by the dichroic mirror and combined with the light emitted from the phosphorescent emitter and transmitted by the dichroic filter to provide white light. The LEDs may be pulsed so that their outputs are synchronized with reflecting and filtering portions (15c & 15d) of a rotating disc (figure 2b) to provide a time averaged white light output which reduces power consumption compared to a continuous LED output arrangement.
