Abstract

An automated retailing system is provided which uses a plurality of static storage locations arranged in an array for the storage and dispensing of items in a retailing or vending environment. The stored items 3 are located in individual carriers 1 which can be transferred between static storage locations and an access port for customer collection by a transfer system 9, 10 and 11. Each carrier 1 may hold more than one item 3 and can be divided into a number of individual item spaces. The system can retain or dispense the carriers 1. The transfer system may be able to extract carriers 1 of different widths and depths preferably using a feature on a leading edge of the carrier 1 and guides to move the carriers 1. The automatic retailing system preferably has more than one access port and may have a preview point for viewing items 3 prior to completing a transaction. Unaccepted items 3 may be returned to the storage location by the transfer system. The system be also be restocked via the transfer system. Items 3 that are fragile or of unusual dimensions can be vended and dispensed through the use of the invention.
