Abstract
A rotary encoder including a stator 610 with multiple concentric circular tracks 615, 625, each comprising a different prime number n1, n2 (preferably both greater than 1) of angular sectors bearing respective sets of transmitter elements 620, 630; and a rotor 600 comprising at least two receiver elements 640, 645 for picking up signals that are electrically coupled there-to from transmitter elements of the respective transmitter tracks. The transmitter and receiver elements may be electrodes or coils such that pick-up signals reflect their capacitive or inductive coupling respectively. Drive signals applied to the inner and outer transmitter element sets may have a common frequency or frequencies based thereon, thus avoiding interference. Alternatively the signals may phase-shifted or time-shifted relative to one another or different drive signals may be supplied to each transmitter element within an angular sector. Preferably the encoder determines a piston position in a fluid separation system (810, Fig.8) piston pump (820, Fig.8).
