Abstract

A freeze-drying apparatus consists of a drying chamber 1 connected via a valve V1 to a principal condenser chamber 2 and directly connected to a secondary condenser chamber 4. The chambers are each connected via separate valves V2 and V3 to a vacuum source 3. When valves V1 and V2 are closed, chamber 4 condenses ice sublimed from the material in chamber 1 and chamber 2 may be defrosted. When the valve V1 and V2 are opened, and valve V3 is closed, the operation is normal and in addition any ice condensed into chamber 4 is re-sublimed into chamber 2 along with ice from the material in the chamber 1. Preferably the valves V1, V2 and V3 are synchronously operated through mechanical connection. <IMAGE>
