Abstract

Electrical power management apparatus 200 for a motor vehicle includes a primary power storage device 211 for powering an engine starter motor 207 and a secondary power storage device 212 for powering additional vehicle electrical loads 220. A solid state primary diode 231, which may be a MOSFET with ideal diode control, is coupled between the primary power storage device 211 and the vehicle electrical load 220, and is operable to allow a flow of current in a forward direction from the primary power storage device 211 to the additional vehicle electrical loads 220 when the starter motor 207 is not in use and to prevent a flow of current in a reverse direction from the secondary power storage device 212 to the engine starter motor 207 when the starter motor 207 is in use. This prevents a voltage drop across the additional vehicle loads 220 when the engine starter motor 207 is operated and protects sensitive electronic devices. The control of the primary diode 231 may be automatic in response to current measurements, thereby reducing the load on a communications network in the vehicle.
