Abstract

Vehicle 1 has a ram-actuated lifting arm 6 wherein the ram 7 (i.e. hydraulic actuator) is secured at one end to the vehicle or arm by a clevis fastener which incorporates a payload weighing device. Clevis pin 12 comprises strain gauge circuitry (21, Fig. 5) outputting an electrical signal indicative of a force (F, Fig. 4) exerted by the ram on the pin. A processor (25, Fig. 5) converts the signal into a load weight for display on indicator (26, Fig. 5). Tilt switch 28 may be secured to the lifting arm and linked to the processor and/or indicator such that the load weight may be measured and/or displayed when the lifting arm is at a predetermined orientation (e.g. horizontal). The processor may calculate the moment of force that will occur if the lifting arm is extended, allowing an overload warning signal to be produced.
