Abstract
In a lens testing apparatus for lenses having a large depth of field, an optical grating 6 is positioned in the film plane of the lens 3 being tested. A rotating perforated mask, 12 (also Fig. 2 not shown) produces scanning images on the grating 6 which are sensed by a photodiode 7. The scanning performed at a first effective distance and at a second effective distance by means of a beam combiner 15 containing a convex 17 and a concave lens 16 Fig. 3. Signals proportional to the light intensities are sensed through the grating for the two scanning images and are combined (Fig. 4 not shown) to provide an indication of a lens characteristic. The signals are added to indicate lens sharpness, and are subtracted to indicate the distance at which the lens is focused. A "go/no go" indicator may be used for sorting. The apparatus shown in Figure 1 is intended to include a sensing unit 4 combining the grating 6 and the photodiode 7 which replaces the film cartridge in a camera and operates during normal shutter opening. <IMAGE>
