Abstract

A stream of stereoscopic images is transmitted as an overlay to a stereoscopic broadcast, the overlay being transmitted for optional display at a receiver in combination with the stereoscopic broadcast. The stream of stereoscopic images is divided into a plurality of sections, each section having a first eye view component and a second eye view component. A map is determined that represents the first eye view component 34a, 34b of each said section and a comparative map 42 is derived for each section representing a comparison between the first and second eye view components for the respective section. The respective map for each section representing the first eye view components 34a, 34b is encoded using run length encoding to produce an encoded first eye view symbol 38 and the respective comparative map for each said section is encoded using run length encoding to produce an encoded comparison symbol 44. A composite symbol is assembled for each section comprising the respective encoded first eye view symbol 38 followed by a first ending symbol, followed by the respective encoded comparison symbol 44 and a second ending symbol, and the composite symbols are transmitted. Also disclosed is the use of a display offset descriptor.
