Abstract
Electric generator apparatus includes a mechanical input 4 connected to the rotor 14 of an electric generator via a differential transmission system including a sun gear 12, a plurality of planet gears 10, which are in mesh with the sun gear 12 and are rotatably carried by a common carrier 8 and an annulus gear 12, which is in mesh with the planet gears 10. The input is connected to one of the carrier 8 and the annulus gear 12 and the rotor 14 of the electric generator is connected to the other of the carrier and the annulus gear. The sun gear 12 is connected to the rotor 22 of an electric motor/ generator 20, 22 by a shaft 24 which passes coaxially through the rotor 14 and stator 16 of the electric generator. The apparatus is connected, in use, to an electrical supply network 38, whereby electrical power may flow between them. A controller 26 controls the flow of electrical power between the electric generator 14, 16 and the electric motor/generator 22, 20. A two-regime transmission employs selectively operable clutch constituted by splined face coupling members to accommodate greater variations in wind speed.
