Abstract

The method automatically analyses an image of a tissue sample to obtain a score that indicates the likelihood of the presence of disease. The score could be the well-known Gleason grade. The method finds particular application to prostate cancer. The image is segmented to identify ducts and to identify nuclei. Parameters are calculated from the segmented images. In the case of the nuclei, a minimum spanning tree graph may be calculated using the nuclei as nodes and the parameters may be properties of the minimum spanning tree graphs. In the case of the ducts, parameters relate to shape or morphometry and could include duct area, convexity and perimeter. The score may be assigned using a classifier perhaps based on linear discriminant analysis.
