Abstract

The invention relates to a method of producing an infrared transmitting optical fibre, which consists in heating a glass tube 1 which contains in a neutral atmosphere a mixture 10 of elements which when melted are capable of forming a compound which is transparent to infrared radiations, and in drawing a lower portion 2 of the tube 1 to form the fibre. The fibre may be used to transmit energy into the human body for cauterization. <IMAGE>
