Abstract

Cartons of the leakproof type comprising a rectangular sleeve each end of which is formed with crease lines to present four closure wall portions 3, 4, two of said portions 3 being further provided with crease lines 5 defining triangular portions to provide gussets, are closed by apparatus comprising means 21 for holding a carton in position for closure, a pair of angularly movable pressure plates, such as plate 27, adapted to engage the triangular portions of the end wall portions 3 and to partially fold inwardly the end and side wail portions 3, 4, a pair of spaced pressure rods 36 to further fold inwardly the end and side wall portions 3, 4 so that the free ends 6 of the side wall portions are in overlapping engagement, and a pressure bar 38 provided to engage the overlapping side wall portions along a previously applied line of adhesive. A reaction plate (25) Fig. 5 (not shown) may be provided to co-act with the pressure bar 38. The end closure apparatus may be incorporated in an installation for setting up, filling and closing cartons. <IMAGE>
