Abstract
A respiratory apparatus is disclosed, with provision for calibration of inhalation and exhalation gas monitoring means (8, 9). During inhalation, gas flows along an inhalation gas line (3) from a gas mixer (2) via a respiratory machine (1) and inhalation gas monitoring means (8) to a patient (4); and during exhalation, gas flows from the patient (4) along an exhalation line (5) via the exhalation gas monitoring means (9) to atmosphere. At least one of the sensors of the means (8) is paired with at least one of the sensors of the means (9) and the values provided by each sensor pair can be compared. Thus the state of the inhaled gas may be compared with that of the exhaled gas. Also, intermittently, for calibration purposes, gas may be passed from the inhalation line (3) through a by-pass line (12) to the exhalation line (5) so that gas of the same composition flows through both banks of sensors. The respiratory machine (1) and the gas mixer (2) are controlled by a control unit (6) in dependence upon the monitored values of the inhaled and exhaled gases During the calibration step, the patient exhales through a valve (15). <IMAGE>
