Abstract

200,884. Stephens, R. H. April 18, 1922. Incandescent vapour burners; vaporizing-apparatus.-A vapour lamp comprises a substantially vertically combined lamp stanward and fuel supply tube 2, a hood 3 carried by the upper end of the tube 2 and having its inside wall in contact with the tube, a baffle device forming the main vaporiser inserted in the upper end of the tube 2, an auxiliary vaporizer 15 in communication with the tube 2' and contained partly or wholly within the hood, and a vapour nipple 13 arranged at the top of the hood 3 and discharging into an extension 12 of the mixing tube 4 of an incandescent burner 8. The hood 3 is formed at the bottom with a gutter 9 to receive methylated spirit for starting purposes. the top of the hood is partly closed by a cover 11, an opening 10 being left on the opposite side to the nipple 13 and tube 2 to allow the escape of the combustion gases. In the lamp shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the fuel passes from the reservoir to the top of the tube 2 through a central tube 6, and the baffle device forming the main vaporizer consists of a tube 7 packed with beads 19 and having a cup member 20 filled with loosely packed asbestos 21 at its lower end. The tube 7 is screwed into the upper end of the tube 2. The auxiliary vaporizer 15 consists of a tube coiled around the mixing tube 4 above the burner 8 and secured at one end to the tube 7 by a sleeve 17. The other end of the vaporizer 15 carries the nipple 13 and is secured to the hood 3. by a screw. Arms or brackets 29 mav be carried by the hood 3 for supporting a shade. In the plan shown in Fig. 5, the auxiliary vaporizer consists of a substantially elliptical tube having two upwardly inclined arms communicating at the top and connected separately at their lower ends to the fuel supply tube 2. A cleaning plug 18 is provided at the junction of the inclined cones. The main vaporizer consists of a tube 7 containing beads and attached to a plug 22 carrying the vapour nipple 13 by a centrally bored screw 23. The lower portion of the tube 7 is of smaller diameter than the fuel tube, and is perforated to admit the fuel. The bottom of the tube is closed by a plug 27. In another form of lamp, both the upper and lower portions of the vaporizer are spaced from the supply tube, and the auxiliary vaporizer consists of two curved tubes communicating at their upper and lower ends with the fuel supply tube opposite the unperforated and perforated portions of the vaporizer respectively.
