Abstract
Bone china is produced by firing a composition comprising bone ash and clay and including a boron-containing compound in water-insoluble form. Use of the boron-containing compound results in a lowering of and widening of the firing temperature range. Bone ash is prepared by degelatinising and optionally calcining animal bone, steeping the bone (ash) in an aqueous solution of B2O3 (or precursor therefor) and then calcining it.
