Abstract

This invention relates to winding apparatus for winding cable or the like within predetermined tension limits. Such apparatus effects tension control by controlling the speed of the motor. In such applications, a.c. motors tend to overheat and can breakdown. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises an a.c. motor for controlling the torque applied to a shaft on which a cable spool can be mounted, and a fan arranged to direct cooling air continuously towards the motor during operation. The fan thus augments the cooling effect of the fan on the end of the motor shaft, if fitted, and provides a cooling air-flow when the a.c. motor is temporarily stopped.
