Abstract

A smoothing iron having two separately controlled heating elements (2,3) is provided with respective controls (11,12) associated with means (10) to ensure that the heating elements are switched on and off by respective triacs (4,5) only at zero transitions of the A.C. supply waveform. The respective controls (11,12) are each provided with devices (15,16) which ensure that each element remains in the 'on' state for at least one half period of the A.C. supply waveform and preferably for at least a whole period.The devices (15,16) are flip-flops. <IMAGE>
