Abstract

The present invention provides a weakened zone 8 in the shank of a tool e.g. a tap where it will preferentially fracture if subjected to an excessive working stress. This zone has an annular groove or has different constitution e.g. by heat treatment. Adjacent the weakened zone there is provided an extractor surface 9 which will remain on the broken-off portion, so that the extractor surface can be engaged by a suitable tool and the broken-off portion can more readily be removed e.g. the extractor surface may comprise flats engageable by a box spanner. The rotatory tool can conveniently be made by lost wax investment casting. <IMAGE>
