Abstract
The work load of a computer in a data processing system is periodically regulated in such a way that the maximum permissible load to be processed in a given time interval is a function of the instantaneous occupancy level of the computer. Such a method of regulation may be applied to a processor-controlled telephone switching system in which it is desirable to control the load conditions since if the processor(s) is or are overloaded, then the service which the system provides deteriorates. The overload conditions are controlled by ensuring that in each of a number of successive time intervals only N new calls will be accepted, any new calls above the number N thus being deferred to the next time interval. This number N, and possibly also the duration of the time interval, is periodically up-dated in accordance with the current traffic conditions. Thus a dynamic technique for the control of the overload in achieved.
