Abstract

Photographic materials containing a photographically useful compound and a polymeric mordant which bond to each other covalently comprise a support bearing a layer or layers containing a photographically useful compound, or a compound capable of releasing one, containing a -ZNHR, -SO2NHR or hydroxyphenyl group wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl or substituted alkyl group and Z is an alkylene, arylenealkylene or cycloalkylene group, any of which may be substituted, or, when taken together with R and the NH, may complete a heterocyclic group; and a polymeric mordant comprising a polymer having recurring units of the formula: <IMAGE> or <IMAGE> wherein R<2> is hydrogen or an alkyl or substituted alkyl group, R<1> is hydrogen or an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl group, L is a linking group comprising an alkylene, arylene or arylenealkylene any of which may be substituted or a -COOR<3>- or -CONHR<3>- group wherein R<3> is an alkylene, arylene or arylalkylene group any of which may be substituted, W is an electron-withdrawing group selected from -SO2-, -CO-, -OCO-, -SO-, -(NR<1>CO-)m and -NR<1>SO2-, m is 1 or 2, n is 0 or 1 provided that when n is 0, W is -SO2- or -OCO-, and X is a leaving group which can be displaced by a nucleophile or eliminated as HX by treatment with a base. Methods of preparing several polymeric mordants are described.
