Abstract

A contact-sensing probe has a contact element (11, 21) which includes a transducer (13, 17) which converts a varying electrical current into vibration of the contact element, or vice versa. A sensing circuit (25A) detects engagement of the contact element with an object by sensing the consequential change in electric current passing through the transducer. Preferably, a driving transducer (13) vibrates the contact element in response to an applied alternating current (29). The vibrations are damped when the element contacts an object, and this is detected by the sensing circuit either by a parameter change (29, 30) in the applied alternating current, or by a parameter change (27, 28) in a current generated by the vibrating contact element in a generating transducer (17). The probe can be used in a conventional length measuring machine (Fig. 14, not shown) such as is employed in engineering for measuring workpieces. It provides higher sensitivity to contact than most conventional probes. <IMAGE>
