Abstract

The invention relates to rock breaking and rock strength testing and is particular to the driving of roadways alongside mineral, particularly coal seams. The device comprises a set of fingers (1) which pivot about a base (3). The ends (2) of the fingers (1) are forced to move radially outwardly along an arcuate path by an hydraulic or pneumatic ram (9). In use, the device is located in a bore hole (21) and the ram (9) is pressurised, causing the ends (2) of the fingers (1) to exert a force on the sides of the borehole (21). When sufficient force is exerted, the rock fractures. An indication of the strength of the rock may be granted by observing the pressure supplied to the ram (9) at the moment of fracture. <IMAGE>
