Abstract

A process for preparing 2,5-dialkyl- 4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3- ones of the formula <IMAGE> wherein one of R and R<1> is CH3 and the other is CH3 or C2H5 which involves cyclizing the corresponding alpha , delta -diol- beta ,???- diones in the presence of an insoluble cation exchange resin in an appropriate medium, for instance an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic medium. The process allows straightforward recovery of the desired product.
