Abstract

A steering column assembly includes a plastics material casing formed of two or more substantially frusto-conically shaped hollow portions 4, 5, 6 capable of telescoping one inside the other, adjacent edge regions of adjacent hollow portions being interconnected by frangible connecting members having a reduced cross section compared with the remainder of the casing, the connecting members being in the form of cross webs 8. In use, when a force is applied to the steering column assembly as a result of, for example, an accident, the webs break and permit the frusto-conical portions to telescope one inside the other. The connecting webs may be straight and of rectangular cross-section or triangular. If desired, the webs may be formed with grooves 9 to alter the force required to break them. <IMAGE>
