Abstract

The stripes e.g. of a contrasting colour, are produced in each of a pair of detergent columns (11, 12) extruded by a single screw extruder (1) from orifices (9, 10) of a die plate (8), by delivering the detergent from the extruder (1) to the die plate (8) through an apertured plate (2) which divides the detergent into a plurality of streams between which a liquid striping additive is injected at locations (3, 4) at or immediately adjacent the plate (2), the plurality of streams being compressed together in flowing to the die plate (8) through a region of decreasing area, which is divided in correspondence with the orifices (9, 10) by means of a partition (13) extruding at least partly towards the die plate 8 from the downstream face of the apertured plate (2). The partition produces a surface striping of improved quality in the corresponding surfaces of the columns, and comprises either curved or flat surfaces contacting the detergent. An apertured plate may be provided on each side of the partition. <IMAGE>
