Abstract

A labelling apparatus comprises a label applying means for applying a label to an article 20, conveyor means 18, label magazine, means for transferring a label from the magazine to the label applying means. The label applying means has a rotatable support structure on which a label carrier means 34 is pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis 40 and pivot control means 42 is timed to pivot the label carrier means 34 about the horizontal axis in a direction towards and away from a position at which the label carrier means contacts and applies a label to an article as the article is conveyed past the label applying means. The pivot control means may comprise a gear member connected to the carrier means 34, a pivotally mounted gear segment intermeshed with the gear member, a cam follower 52 mounted on the gear segment, and a stationary cam 54. The cam 54 may have a replaceable portion so that the tilting action of the carrier 34 is adjustable for article 20 of different shape. <IMAGE>
