Abstract
In a voice coding system each vowel or consonant sound, or phoneme, is divided into repeated similar sections and the analog electrical equivalent of one of those sections is transmitted. If repetitive sections cannot be distinguished, e.g. during unvoiced consonants, a signal is derived from a section of predetermined length. The signal is transmitted in digital form together with signals indicating the number of sections in the phoneme, the intensity of the phoneme, the intensity of each of the repeated sections of the phoneme, any pre-equalisation applied to the speech, and phoneme change. On reception the analog electric equivalent signal is recovered, stored, level controlled, equalised, and repeated the appropriate number of times until a phoneme change is indicated.
