Abstract

A mop comprises a hank 15 of a filamentary material which preferentially adsorbs contaminating material, the hank 15 being attached to a support portion 13 at a predetermined position on the circumference of the hank whereby each turn 16 of the hank is secured at said predetermined position to the support portion 13, while the remainder of the turn is allowed to fall freely from the support portion. The filamentary material may be an olephilic and hydrophobic material such as polypropylene for mopping up oil. The mop has the advantages that it can be constructed easily and without the use of complex machinery and that the strips of polypropylene forming the mop head lack free ends thereby putting up resistance to the downward movement of oil under gravity when the mop is being transported, and tending to spread out so as to achieve the maximum adsorptive effect. <IMAGE>
