Abstract

Apparatus for smoothing and/or polishing a part-spherical surface on a lens comprises an upper carrier which is constrained to rotate about an axis inclined to the vertical. A lower carrier is constrained to rotate about an axis which can rock in a vertical plane. The path of travel of the lower carrier during rocking is fixed, as is the angle of inclination of the upper carrier axis to the plane in which rocking occurs. <IMAGE>
