Abstract

A radio-frequency energy heater (12) in which RF energy is applied across a heating zone to heat a dielectric material includes a detector (18), constituted by a neon or fluorescent tube, responsive to stray RF energy located outside the zone, and a responder (19) coupled to the detector for signalling a reduction in stray RF energy to switch off or reduce the RF energy supply to the heating zone in response to said reduction in stray RF energy. This has the effect of cutting off the RF energy in the heating zone if arcing occurs therein and hence reducing the likelihood of fires. These heaters can be used for curing resin impregnated filter papers (17). <IMAGE>
