Abstract

A touch-responsive switch comprises first and second conductive layers (A,B) arranged on opposite sides of a dielectric panel (G) in superimposed relation to one another, an electrical connection (SC) to the second layer (B) for use in detecting operation of the switch with a read signal, a phosphor layer (P) in contact with the second conductive layer (B), an electrode (E) superimposed on the phosphor layer (P), and an input connection (SL) to the electrode for the application of an illumination control signal. The dielectric panel (G) and first and second conductive layers (A,B) are composed of light transmitting material so that light passes through them from the phosphor layer (P) when the latter is excited by the potential difference produced by signals on the second conductive layer (B) and the electrode (E). A matrixed array of such switches can be provided comprising n groups of m switches with m read input (SC), n read outputs, (SW) and n inputs (SL) for illumination control signals. <IMAGE>
